A property asset base worth around £220 billion across central government and costing £6 billion a year to run underpins central government’s operations. As these operations evolve in the context of rising public expectation, increasing focus on improving efficiency and value for money, and the continuous emergence of new technologies, so the asset base needs to develop to reflect and support their evolution. The Government’s strategy for increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the public sector gives further impetus to these developments.
It’s now over a year since Government accepted the recommendations of Sir Michael Lyons’ report to the Chancellor 'Towards Better Management of Public Sector Assets'. OGC has responsibility for embedding effective property asset management in central civil government within a wider initiative to improve asset management across the wider public sector.
The event on 26 June 2006 will inform you of the progress that has been made in implementing the Government commitments, and the next steps. It will give you the opportunity to hear from the key decision makers and implementers of the initiative. Stephen Timms, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has agreed to give the keynote speech and this will give you an update and direct insight into the role of Asset Management in the delivery of the wider Government Efficiency Programme. Other presenters will include Professor Steven Male, Leeds University, on the base-lining study he is undertaking on Government performance in managing and exploiting its property assets, and the improvements needed. You will also have the opportunity to hear from Christopher Hedley, IPD Occupiers, on the cross government property benchmarking project that we are jointly undertaking. The day will be chaired by Mike Burt, Director of Government Relocation and Asset Management (GRAM), OGC and will feature a programme of practical workshops which will focus on key asset management issues.
The June 2006 conference is a must attend event for anyone who is involved in any way with Asset Management and Efficiency.
