This session will illustrate the relocation of The Standards Board for England from London to Manchester. Allister Duncan, who worked on the project since its inception, will, step by step, share his experiences and how they succeeded in getting over 35% of their staff to relocate. The session will also highlight how external providers gave practical support to ensure a successful move.

Laura Gordon, Glasgow:Edinburgh Collaboration Director, will highlight some of the exciting opportunities on offer in Scotland, while Simon Gill, senior official at the Department for International Development will discuss his experience of successfully relocating to Scotland. The session will be introduced by David Reid of Scottish Development International who will outline support and resources available to relocators from its London office

2E: Delivering on Diversity - the Birmingham Experience

Business continuity will be the major concern facing managers through the relocation process. In particular assessment and management of risks associated with losing key staff and of failing to recruit suitable skills will be crucial.
In addition departments and NDPB’s will be anxious to maintain diversity in their local recruitment.
Locate in Birmingham have worked closely with the Gambling Commission, the Big Lottery Fund and other agencies as they plan and complete the relocation process. This has had a significant focus on retention and recruitment issues. This workshop will cover these issues and also the specific experience of the Gambling Commission in addressing diversity and exclusion issues in its recruitment in Birmingham.

3B: Managing the Transition
Running time: 15:00 - 16:00
At the outset of any Lyons relocation project managing transition will be viewed as the most challenging, and potentially off putting aspect of the process. Effectively managed though, transition management can be an exciting and ultimately rewarding part of the programme, which is often overlooked.
This workshop will take a comprehensive view of this from all sides, with an emphasis of how relocation and transition fits into the wider Public Sector Reform Programme and Varney.

3C: Regional Economic Impact of Relocation. Newcastle University
Running time: 15:00 - 16:00
Newcastle University present their findings of their research into the real effects of relocation around the country.The session discusses the regional implications of Lyons relocations, and examines the current round of dispersal in a historical and international context. Research on public sector relocation has been intermittent and the current evidence is patchy. Nevertheless, the paper highlights the importance of considering the impact of relocation on both origin and destination locations and the interconnection of relocation and public sector reform..

3D: Appraising Options

The presentation will focus on different approaches to options appraisal in particular with reference to verifying that the benefits proposed to each option can actually be realised, this leads to the development of more realistic business cases that are likely to deliver what they promise.

Making the RDA’s your first point of contact for relocation gives you access to a wide range of information and services. This workshop demonstrates how the RDAs add value to relocation through their extensive regional knowledge and networks, using case study examples of recruitment and property development.
