Public Sector Leadership 2005

Conference / Exhibition April 21st QEII Conference Centre

Those charged with delivering public services face huge challenges, both today and in the future. Amongst these challenges, are the business demands of delivering government services electronically, meeting and surpassing ever-greater public expectations of service delivery, satisfying the requirement to modernise and reform public services and the increased need to work in partnership across public sector and with private and voluntary organisations.

The role played by leaders and leadership in meeting these challenges cannot be overstated and yet public service organisations are not attracing or keeping the best leaders. Why is this? What can be done to remedy the situation?

Clearly, leaders need to have the freedom to lead whilst remaining accountable for their performance but how do we strike the balance? Parachuting in highflying leaders may well provide short-term solutions to particular problems. However, a long-term strategy must be put in place to establish methods of identification, training and development of potential leaders, with well thought out succession planning key to an effective programme.

This one-day conference will bring together practitioners in leadership devleopment from all areas of public service along with senior academics of international renown. During the main plenary and the range of breakout sessions, delegates will have an opportunity to learn, via case studies and practical presentations, from their peers in a wide range of public service organisations and from the cream of private sector service providers and advisers.
