      Plenary Chair

      He is President & Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast. The University was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further & Higher Education in 2005 & was invited to join the Russell Group of leading UK universities in 2006. The University has established strategic partnerships with Georgetown University in Washington DC, University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Trinity College Dublin & University College Dublin. He serves on the Northern Ireland Economic Development Forum, the Council of CBI Northern Ireland & the Steering Group of the US - Ireland Research & Development Partnership. He is a Non-Executive Director of Rolls Royce Group plc & he serves on the Board of UCEA (Universities & Colleges Employers Association). He is a Fellow & Council Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering & a Companion of the Management Institute.

      'The Fostering Of Progressive & Dynamic Leadership Qualities & Skills - Central To Achievement Of The Government's Economic & Social Goals For Northern Ireland'

      Sir Reg was born in 1947 &, after attending Hillcrest Prep School, Belfast & the Royal School in Armagh, he studied Economics at Queen's University, Belfast where he graduated in 1970. Working in business & industry between 1970 &1986 - for Goodyear International Corp., the House of Fraser, Switzer & Co., & McMahon & Co. - Sir Reg eventually founded his own business in 1986. Actively involved in politics from his student days, Sir Reg was a member of the Queen's University Conservative & Unionist Association. In 1975, when still only 28, he was elected a Member of the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention, the body which superceded the old Northern Ireland Parliament. By 1975, he was already at the heart of the Party's machine, serving as Secretary of the Ulster Unionist Council's Policy Committee. Sir Reg has had an active career in Belfast City Council since he was first elected as a Councillor in 1985. He has twice been Lord Mayor of Belfast, in 1989 & again in 1993. In 1994, he was appointed OBE for his services to local government. In addition to his long service as a Councillor & on numerous Council Committees, Sir Reg has served on the Senate of Queen's Univesity, as a Belfast Harbour Commissioner, as a Director of Laganside Corporation from 1992-1998, as a Member of the Eastern Health & Socal Services Board & on the Standing Advisory Commission on Human Rights from 1994-1996. Sir Reg was also a Vice-President of the Ulster Unionist Party from 1996-2004. In the 1990s, he served as a leading member of the Ulster Unionist negotiating teams both in the Brooke-Mayhew talks of 1991 & in the Castle Buildings talks which ultimately led to the Belfast Agreement & the formation of the present Assembly in 1998. Sir Reg was elected to the new Assembly & was subsequently Knighted (KBE) in the New Year's Honours List of 1999.
      On the formation of the Executive in 1999, Sir Reg was appointed as Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Investment, a position he held until the collapse of the power-sharing Executive in October 2002. In addition, during the Summer of 2001 he served for a time as Acting First Minister of Northern Ireland. In 2004, Sir Reg became Deputy Leader of the Ulster Unionist Assembly Party & a year later, in 2005, he was elected Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. Sir Reg is married to Stella, & they have two children - Julie-Anne & Christopher.

      'Leadership In Business, Investment & Regeneration'

      Lord Rana arrived in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s, starting off life as a retailer. He formed Andras House in 1987 & invested in property in Belfast city centre. Lord Rana is widely recognised as having started the ‘golden mile’, bringing nightlife back to Belfast. Andras House Limited is now the largest hotel group in Northern Ireland. He has received honorary doctorates from both the University of Ulster & Queens University & has served as President of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Lord Rana supports many local charities, founded the Rana Charitable Trust in 1996, is Chairman of Thanksgiving Square, & was a Board member of Caring Breaks. At the end of December 2004, he founded the Tsunami-Earthquake Northern Ireland Appeal to support children adversely affected by this terrible disaster. In addition, through his two charitable trusts in India, he has built the Sanghol Educational Complex near Chandigarh, bringing higher level education to people in rural areas. In 2004, he was appointed as the Honorary Indian Consul in Northern Ireland & has led several Trade Missions on behalf of Invest NI including India, China, Poland & Estonia. In April 2004, he was elevated to the House of Lords & became Baron Rana of Malone in the County of Antrim.

    • 10:05 : Trevor Carson - Director : Learning and Skills Development Agency Northern Ireland (LSDA NI)

      'Leadership, Workforce Development & Quality Improvement'

      Trevor's role at LSDANI is to provide strategic vision & high level advice for the further education sector in Northern Ireland & to contribute to the business plan for Northern Ireland with the wider aims of the Learning and Skills Development Agency firmly in mind. Most recently, Trevor has co-ordinated support for the merger process of the further education sector in Northern Ireland which involved the 16 colleges merging to form six large regional colleges. As well as support at a sector level, he has been actively involved in tailoring the support in the individual regional colleges. This has included specific support for communication strategies, culture change, development of values & specifically development of leadership & management skills at a range of levels in the colleges. From 1995 – 1998, he was the Development Officer for Further Education & Adult Education in Belfast Education & Library Board. Trevor’s career began with teaching a range of science-related subjects in a large boys secondary school in Belfast, where he was a Head of Department & Year Master. He was also a micro-teaching superviser & part-time lecturer in science education at University of Ulster, Coleraine. His career in further education began as a science lecturer at Belfast Institute of Further & Higher Education.

      'Community Leadership'

      Born in Dublin, Avila holds a B.A. (Hons.) degree from University College Dublin & a M.A. in International Relations from the Australian National University. She also has qualifications in Public Administration & a Certificate in Welfare Law (Queen's University, Belfast). Avila has been working in Northern Ireland since 1975. Initially employed in Derry in community work, Avila worked in a Community Education Project in Magee College, was active in establishing the Women's Aid organisation & was involved in a range of anti-poverty initiatives. Since 1980, Avila has been based in Belfast, working for a period with the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action & subsequently as Co-ordinator of the Rural Action Project (N.I.) - an EU Second Anti-Poverty Programme initiative. In 1990, Avila was appointed the first Women's Officer for the Transport & General Workers' Union (T.G.W.U.) (Ireland). She served on the Northern Ireland Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (I.C.T.U.) & on the Executive Council of the I.C.T.U. Avila has written extensively on community development, women's issues & Civil Society. She has been Director of the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland (previously the Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust) since 1994.

The programme - part of the council’s ‘gender action plan’ - helped participants achieve political aspirations, carry out corporate responsibilities, make a positive impact & create a culture of respect.

      Colin’s second son Tim was 12 when he was killed when the IRA bombed Warrington in 1993. Since then, Colin has dedicated himself to the peace process. His speeches are inspiring, motivational & moving, highlighting his dedication & perseverance in his quest for peace. A Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, & a Magistrate, Colin’s professional career in personnel management began with Plessey Telecommunications in 1969 after completing his BA hons degree in Politics. From then until 1998, he worked in senior HR roles with Plessey Telecommunications, the Viyella Textile Group & the IMI Engineering Group, before joining Penna, an HR Consulting Group, as an associate consultant. Since 1998, he has operated as an independent HR Consultant, specialising in career transition & executive coaching. Colin, who has a Diploma in Counselling, was awarded the OBE in the 2004 Queens Birthday Honours List. Other accolades include Rotary International’s ‘World Understanding & Peace’ Award; The Rotary Foundation’s ‘Paul Harris Fellowship’ in ‘appreciation of tangible & significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding & friendly relations among peoples of the world’; ‘Communicator of the Year’ (from The British Association of Industrial Editors); & the Ross McWhirter Foundation ‘Good Citizenship Award’. He was nominated for the RNID ‘Communicator of the Year Award’ & the inaugural BBC ‘People’s Award’. He wrote the critically acclaimed book, ‘Tim: An Ordinary Boy’; presented the BBC Panorama programme, ‘An Ordinary Boy'; & presented his own television series ‘The Colin Parry Interview’ for Granada TV. Colin is married to Wendy & has two surviving children, Dominic & Abigail. He is a lifelong supporter (“& sufferer”) of Everton Football Club.
