Workers serving the public are subject to high levels of risk of physical assault, verbal abuse, and increasingly, non-verbal abuse (such as internet, text, email etc) while in pursuit of their daily duties. Changes to work practices such as increased lone or remote working have added further to the perception of this risk, if not the reality, with fear being a major factor in increased levels of stress being experienced by many workers.

This potentially has damaging consequences for both client-facing staff and customer service across a wide range of sectors, including:
- Central and local government (job centres, schools, housing offices etc)
- Emergency services (NHS, Police & Fire)
- Public transport (bus, rail, air etc)
- Retail & leisure (pubs, bars, clubs, betting shops etc)
- Voluntary sector (social & care)
