Public Sector Skills 2007
The 2007 National Conference, QEII Conference Centre, London, 3rd December 2007
The Government's first 'Skills Envoy' has set all public sector employers a three-year deadline to improve the abilities of their entire workforces. "You've got three years to start training. If you don't do it, do it. If you do do it, do it better," said Sir Digby Jones, who was appointed to the role following the publication of the Leitch review of Britain's long-term skills needs.
"I make no apologies for calling loudly upon government to lead by example in... taking up the skills challenge within its own workforce," Sir Digby recently commented.
With more than six million staff (almost a quarter of the working population) our central government, local government, NHS, police & fire service organisations are well-equipped to make a major impact on the skillset of UKplc.
So how is the public sector collectively performing on employee skills development? Are some elements of the public sector performing better than others? What kinds of good practice examples are available? Who should public sector employers be turning to for advice & information?
The inaugural Public Sector Skills conference & exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for key players to come together to discuss & debate these & many other issues.
Representing national, regional & local public sector bodies, delegates will be drawn from policy, strategy & practical operational disciplines (given the nature of the subject area, a significant number of already confirmed-attendees are chief / deputy chief executives, & directors / managers of business, HR, knowledge, learning, organisational development, performance, personnel, policy, standards, skills, training, & workforce development).
The day will also be fully supporting the Government's Skills Pledge initiative (an employer's commitment to voluntarily help every eligible employee to gain basic skills & a 'level two' qualification). Preparations are being made for the day's developing agenda to incorporate a pan-public sector 'Pledge' signing & photograph ceremony with Ministerial attendance. Further details will be confirmed soon.
