The Journey Ahead For Business Travel And Commuting

Placeholder

Monday 6th October - QEII Conference Centre: London

The public sector spends some £5bn each year on business travel. These 'out-of-office’ expenses are spread over a wide range of areas - from employee mileage allowances to meeting room hire, hotel accommodation, planes, trains, taxis and restaurants.

With fuel prices rocketing, work- related journeys could be set to place even bigger financial burdens on central government, local government, NHS, fire, police, university and college organisations.

Additionally, as employers of more than 20% of the UK workforce, the public sector is responsible for the day to day commute of a six-million strong army of executives; officials and staff - presenting an extra set of challenges to ongoing efficiency and productivity objectives (the HM Treasury-commissioned ‘King Report’ recommends the introduction – by 2010 – of travel plans by all major public sector employer organisations;and late 2008 sees the unveiling of a new national standard for travel plans).

On financial, environmental and CSR grounds, it’s time for the public sector to examine:

  • How much business and commuter travel they are currently making;
  • Why they are doing it;
  • How much (directly or indirectly) they are spending on it;
  • What kind of people are making these spending decisions and what are their purchasing skills and competencies;
  • What they can do to reduce costs, change habits, introduce business-orientated alternatives to travel and commuting and minimise environmental impacts.
