    • Brendan Barber - General Secretary : Trades Union Congress (TUC)

      Brendan Barber is General Secretary of the TUC, which represents 59 unions with a total membership of around 6.5 million working in all sectors of the economy. Brendan was born in Southport & attended St Mary’s College in Crosby. After a gap year with VSO in Ghana, he took a degree in social sciences at City University London, where he became President of the Student Union. He joined the TUC in 1975, becoming Head of the Press Department in 1979 & the Industrial Relations Department in 1987 before being appointed Deputy General Secretary in 1993. He was elected General Secretary in 2003 & has served on a number of public bodies, including the ACAS Council. He is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Court of the Bank of England.

    • Professor Denise Skinner - Associate Dean For Applied Research : Coventry University

      Denise is currently Associate Dean (Applied Research) in the Faculty of Business, Environment & Society at Coventry University. An experienced manager & senior researcher, Denise became an academic after a successful career as a manager in the public sector. Her current research projects include the annual national 24/7 Work Life Balance Survey.

    • Stephen Bevan - Director of Research : Work Foundation

      Stephen is responsible for the delivery of a programme of both applied & frontier research on the world of work. With a team of 15 researchers, he oversees a programme of more than 20 research studies each year, each designed to enhance the UK’s evidence-base & to inform the climate of policy debate in the UK’s Boardrooms & in Whitehall. His areas of expertise include employee engagement, retention & well-being, work organisation & job design. Stephen has carried out research & consultancy for the No. 10 Policy Unit, The Prime Minister’s Office for Public Services Reform (OPSR), HM Treasury, the Cabinet Office & the European Commission. He has also worked for many ‘blue-chip’ employers & several research councils & charitable trusts.

      Anita Pickerden is the Higher Education Manager at Bournville College & manages the Diploma in Public Service Leadership programme across colleges in Birmingham & its neighbouring areas. She has evaluated the soft indicators of the Equal Adjust the Balance project, producing several research papers on Work Life Balance issues.

      Ellie commenced employment with the Metropolitan Police in 1978. Her current portfolio includes HR Policy, Employee Relations, Fairness At Work, Diversity & Work Life Balance. She is very proud of her team's achievement in winning two awards sponsored by Working Families for (1) Family Friendly Policies & (2) Employer of the Year award.

  • A1: A Toolkit Approach To WLB Success

    Demonstrating how a public sector employer introduced a WLB Toolkit for every member of staff, containing up-to- date information on policies & guidelines as well as a WLB self-check tool & signposting to further support. The Toolkit is linked to intranet & website; usable in office & at home; & is easy to navigate, with spoken as well as written guidance.

Recent evidence suggests that they can improve productivity, reduce stress & sickness levels & enhance the image of the employer, both internally to staff & externally. We will discuss the main issues with implementing such schemes using examples, successes & lessons learned at two NHS Hospital Trusts, who have implemented comprehensive projects to improve the health of their employees over the past few years.
